Multifunctional hydrophilic and hydrophobic

The scope of this interesting reaction recently has been extended to include the synthesis of similar multifunctional hydrophilic and hydrophobic monomers and oligomers derived from ethylene oxide-based acrylates and fluorinated and siloxane-based acrylates, respectively (7,8). This paper describes the synthesis, characterization and possible biomedical applications of these new acrylic monomers and oligomers. [Pg.193]

Li et al. (2008a) introduced solvent-resistant multifunctional PV membranes based on segmented polymer networks (SPNs). Hydrophilic (acrylate)-terminated poly(ethylene oxide) was used as a macromolecular cross-linker of different hydro-phobic polyacrylates for the synthesis of amphiphilic SPNs. Multifunctional canposite membranes with thin SPN top layers were prepared by in situ polymerization. The support consisted of hydrolyzed PAN. These membranes were tested for dehydration of EtOH and isopropyl alcohol. The selectivity of the membranes greatly depended on the composition or the ratio of the hydrophilic and hydrophobic phases of the SPN. [Pg.274]

An examination of photoelectron transfer within multifunctional porphyrin and ubiquinone analogues linked by H-bonding interactions which serve to hold the donor and acceptor in a co-facial orientation, has been made, and is the first example of electron transfer between such structures which is complete within the picosecond range.Irradiation of colloidal syn-tetraresorcinolporphyrin having eight alkylphosphocholine side-chains (octopus porphyrin), and of the corresponding Zn(II) complex in the presence of hydrophobic phenyl-p-benzoquinone or hydrophilic naphtho-l,2-quinone-4-sulfonate, induces electron transfer to the quinone electron transfer to is also reported.A study has been made of... [Pg.229]

In this linkages are covalent bonds. They are influenced by the chemical linkages and functional groups present in the gel networks. Hydrophilic polymers and hydrophilic-hydrophobic copolymers are examples of chemically crosslinked gels obtained by the polymerization of vinyl monomers in fhe presence of multifunctional crosslinkers. These crosslinkers are the crosslinking points within and between the polymeric chains allowing modification of the entire physicochemical properties of the gel systems... [Pg.409]

This versatile modifiable property allows liposomes to encapsulate functional molecules in the interior, inserted in the bilayer or attached on the bilayer membrane surface. Hence, they have been considered for application in multifunctional platforms, that is, therapy and imaging. They protect the amphiphilic, hydrophobic, and hydrophilic therapeutic agents against various threats that lead to their immediate dilution and degradation. [Pg.209]
