Bom in Mulhouse, Alsace, in 1866, he was French by birth, German in upbringing, and, working in Zurich, he became a Swiss citizen in 1894. 

Alfred Werner, the founder of coordination chemistry, was born on December 12, 1866, in Mulhouse, Alsace, France (in 1870 annexed to Germany). He was the fourth and last child of Jean-Adam Werner, a foundry worker and locksmith, and his second wife, Salome Jeanette Tesche, the dominant figure in the Werner household and a member of the wealthy Tesche family. Although most of Werner s articles were published in the German language and in German journals, his cultural and pofitical sympathies remained with France. The spirit of rebellion and resistance to authority that characterized his childhood and adolescence may have contributed to the development of his revolutionary coordination theory. 

Alfred Werner, Swiss chemist bom in Mulhouse, Alsace (then part of France), in 1866, died in Zurich in 1919 won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1913.

Weiss, Pierre Ernest (1865-1940) was born in Mulhouse in the Alsace region of eastern France. He proposed the domain theory of ferromagnetism in 1907 while he was working at the Polytechnic Institute in Zurich.
