Creatine was first isolated in 1835 by Chevreul 20 years later Dessaignes showed it to contain a methyl group. Choline was obtained from lecithin in bile by Strecker in 1849 and methionine isolated by Mueller in 1922. That methionine contained a methyl group linked to sulfur was demonstrated by Barger and Coyne in 1928. [Pg.129]

DDT, discovered by Dr. Mueller in Switzerland, and used for insect vector control during World War II, quickly found a place in forestry, as well as agriculture. The material proved highly effective in the control of such insects as the spruce budworm, tussock moth, hemlock looper, and many others. It was widely used in the Northeast for control of the introduced Gypsy moth during these early years. The low toxicity of DDT to mammals made it to appear to be an excellent insecticide for forestry use. It was only after subsequent studies revealed the impact on other species that reservations about its use was raised. [Pg.8]

Although many measurements of potentials have been made with membranes obtained from animals, one needs simplification3 if one is to understand the function of various entities of a cell. The most common model system to act as a simplified biological membrane is the bilayer lipid membrane (BLM), first prepared by Mueller in 1962. It consists of two lipid molecules tail to tail (Fig. 14.8) with the polar groups... [Pg.399]

The perception of risks and benefits changes with time as the history of DDT illustrates. DDT was first synthesized in 1874 by the German chemist Zeidler. However, the insecticidal properties of DDT were discovered only later, in 1939, by Paul Mueller in Switzerland, who received the Nobel Prize for his discovery. After it became available on the market, DDT was accepted immediately and used on a large scale. For the first time in history, people could control insects effectively. Mothers could relieve their children from lice, farmers could protect their livestock and harvest. DDT has probably been responsible for saving more lives than any other synthetic chemical, perhaps with the exception of antibiotics. It is estimated that around 1940 ca 300 million people suffered from malaria. The mortality rate was about 1 percent. Thirty years later DDT and WHO (World Health organization) malaria program had eradicated malaria in many parts of the world. DDT also... [Pg.420]

Mueller in 1968 described System Safety as organized common sense [109]. I hope that you have found that to be an accurate description of the contents of this book. In closing I remind you of the admonition by Bertrand Russell A life without adventure is likely to be unsatisfying, but a life in which adventure is allowed to take any form it will is sure to be short [179, p. 21]. [Pg.464]

Also, in further developments of this kind of treatment, specific structureforming and structure-breaking effects of the organic adsorbate must be considered in relation to the orientation of solvent molecules, e.g., as indi-cated by entropies and heats of adsorption of pyridine at Hg electrodes. Analysis of various types of isotherms which represent organic molecule adsorption has been made by Kovac and Bockris and by Wroblowa and Mueller in relation to the theory presented above. [Pg.675]

The direct process is also quite versatile and can be fine-tuned to prepare other types of chlorosilanes also. Ethylchlorosilanes could also be similarly prepared analogous to the synthesis of methylchlorosilanes. Preparation of phenylchlorosilanes required a slight modification of the catalyst. Addition of a mixture of HCl and MeCl to silicon affords mixtures of methylchlorosilanes along with MeSiHCU- Simultaneously, along with Rochow, but independently, Richard Mueller in Germany had also come out with a direct process, initially for preparing HSiCls, and later for methylchlorosilanes [7]. [Pg.219]

Chlorination of ethanol to produce trichloroacetaldehyde, CCI3CHO, was first described in 1832. Its hydrated form is called chloral and is a powerful hypnotic with the nickname knockout drops. Chloral is a key reagent in the synthesis of DDT, which was first prepared in 1874 and was demonstrated by Paul Mueller in 1939 to be a powerful insecticide. The use of DDT in the suppression of insect-home diseases was perhaps best described in a 1970 report by the U.S. National Academy of Sciences To only a few chemicals does man owe as great a debt as to DDT.. .. In little more than two decades, DDT has prevented 500 million human deaths, due to malaria, that otherwise would have been inevitable. DDT effectively kills the Anopheles mosquito, the main carrier of the malaria parasite. Malaria afflicts hundreds of millions of people worldwide and claims... [Pg.120]
