Mouse skin model

Phenol was tested for carcinogenicity by oral administration in drinking-water in one strain of mice and one strain of rats. No treatment-related increase in the incidence of tumours was observed in mice or in female rats. In male rats, an increase in the incidence of leukaemia was observed at the lower dose but not at the higher dose. Phenol was tested extensively in the two-stage mouse skin model and showed promoting activity (lARC, 1989). 

Aloe extract, used in association with vitamin E and squalene, is also able to cause regression of any tumor already formed in a mouse skin model. 

Skin is also an important target organ for estrogens. The estrogenic effect on skin is well characterized, as well as the effect of estrogen withdrawal. A major effect of estrogen is the increased levels of HA deposition and the associated water of hydration. Topical estrogens are also able to enhance HA deposition in skin, as documented in the hairless mouse skin model.280...

A variefy of chemical agents are known to act as tumor promoters in various systems. However, much of our knowledge of the cellular and molecular mechanisms of tumor promotion has come from studies using the phorbol ester tumor promoters in the mouse skin model and in various cell culture systems.
