Motor fuels polymerization reactions

The first polymerizations were free radical reactions. In 1933 researchers at ICI discovered that ethene polymerizes into a branched structure that is now known as low density polyethene (LDPE). In the mid- 50s a series of patents were issued for new processes in which solid catalysts were used to produce polyethene at relatively low pressures. The first was granted to scientists at Standard Oil (Indiana) who applied nickel oxide on activated carbon and molybdenum oxide on alumina. Their research did not lead to commercial processes. In the late 40s Hogan and Banks of Phillips were assigned to study the di- and trimerization of lower olefins. The objective was to produce high octane motor fuels. To obtain light ends conversion, alkylation and polymerization are used to increase the relative amounts of liquid fuel products manufactured. Alkylation converts olefins, (propylene, butylenes, amylenes, etc.), into high octane gasoline by reacting them with isobutane. Polymerization involves reaction of propylene and/or butylenes to produce an unsamrated hydrocarbon mixture in the motor gasoline boiling range. [Pg.10]

The rotaxane assembly is adopted by many enzymes that operate on nucleic acids and proteins. In the case of processive enzymes, the catalytic reaction drives the sequential motion of the enzyme on its polymeric substrate. Therefore, these enzymes can be viewed as molecular motors powered by chemical reactions and moving one-dimensionally on a track, in which fuel is provided by the track itself.
