Motor and sensory functions

Peripheral neuropathy is degeneration of peripheral nerves. Because motor and sensory axons tun in the same nerves, usually both motor and sensory functions are affected in this disease. Neuropathies may be either acute (e.g., Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease) or chronic (e.g., Guillain-Barre syndrome) and are categorized as demyelinating or axonal. 

All animals used for the study, those surviving for a period of about 14 days after treatment and those being lethally intoxicated have to be necropsied. In addition, body weight development, food and water consumption should be noted at weekly intervals, urine and faeces analysis, cardiovascular functions, hematological parameters respiration and spontaneous behavior such as motor and sensory functions. All tissues showing macroscopically visible changes should be analyzed histologically (Dekant and Vamvakas 1994). 

Overall, data from animal studies, including studies on nonhuman primates, indicate that the developing nervous system is a sensitive target organ for low-dose MeHg exposure. Results from animal studies have reported effects on cognitive, motor, and sensory functions. 

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a condition that affects up to 15% of the U.S. population. Patients may complain of a variety of symptoms, the most characteristic of which is recurrent abdominal pain associated with altered bowel movements. IBS appears to result from a varying combination of disturbances in visceral motor and sensory function, often associated with significant affective disorders. The disturbances in bowel function can be either constipation or diarrhea or both at different times. Considerable evidence suggests a specific enhancement of visceral (as opposed to somatic) sensitivity to noxious, as well as physiological stimuh in this syndrome.

Neurological findings in NPD may vary considerably. Disturbances of mental, motor and sensory functions can occur depending on the pattern of lesions...
