Mood Stabilizers clonazepam

First, optimize current mood stabilizer or initiate mood-stabilizing medication lithium,0 valproate,0 or carba-mazepine0 Consider adding a benzodiazepine (lorazepam or clonazepam) for short-term adjunctive treatment of agitation or insomnia if needed Alternative medication treatment options carbam-azepine0 if patient does not respond or tolerate, consider atypical antipsychotic (e.g., olanzapine, quetiapine, risperidone) or oxcarbazepine. [Pg.777]

High-potency benzodiazepines (e.g., clonazepam and lorazepam) are common alternatives to or in combination with antipsychotics for acute mania, agitation, anxiety, panic, and insomnia or in those who cannot take mood stabilizers. Lorazepam IM may be used for acute agitation. A relative contraindication for long-term benzodiazepines is a history of drug or alcohol abuse or dependency. [Pg.779]

Typical doses of clonazepam have been in the range of 2 to 16 mg/day given on a once or twice per day schedule due to its longer half-life. A major advantage of this anticonvulsant is its relative lack of adverse effects and freedom from laboratory monitoring in comparison with CBZ and VPA. Clonazepam may be more useful when combined with lithium or CBZ rather than as a specific antimanic agent, perhaps supplanting the need for antipsychotics. In this sense, it can be viewed as a behavioral suppressor, rather than a true mood stabilizer (121). [Pg.196]

Klonopin (clonazepam) A conunon medication used as a mood stabilizer often prescribed for the following reasons inadequate response or intolerance to antipsychotics or lithium, manic symptoms, rapid cycling of the condition, EEC abnormalities, and head trauma. The most common side effects are difficulty with balance and drowsiness. Behavioral and emotional side effects include irritability, excitement, increased anger and aggression, trouble sleeping or nightmares, and memory loss. The most serious side effect is the interaction effect if this medication is combined with alcohol or other drugs, which can result in sleepiness, unconsciousness, and death. [Pg.303]
