Molecular orbitals metal carbonyls

The reaction between a trinuclear metal carbonyl cluster and trimetbyl amine borane has been investigated (41) and here the cluster anion functions as a Lewis base toward the boron atom, forming a B—O covalent bond (see Carbonyls). Molecular orbital calculations, supported by stmctural characterization, show that coordination of the amine borane causes small changes in the trinuclear framework. [Pg.262]

Although Ni(CO)4 was discovered many years ago, no neutral Ni2(CO)x compound has ever been synthesized in macroscopic amounts. However, several communications report ionic species such as [Ni2(CO)8l+, [Ni2(CO)7], and [Ni2(CO)6]+, where structures with one or two bridging carbonyls are proposed.2418 Plausible structures for neutral Ni2(CO)x (x = 5, 6, 7) have been investigated by theoretical methods, and decomposition temperatures well below room temperature have been predicted.2419,2420 Tetra-, penta-, and hexanuclear nickel carbonyl clusters have been investigated by means of molecular orbital theory. It is found that the neutral forms are more stable than the corresponding anionic forms but the anionic forms gain in stability as the nuclearity rises.2421 Nickel carbonyl cluster anions are manifold, and structural systematics have been reviewed.2422,2423 An example includes the anion [Ni9(CO)i6]2- with a close-packed two-layer metal core.2424... [Pg.497]

The bands due to Fe(CO)4 are shown in Fig. 8. This spectrum (68) was particularly important because it showed that in the gas phase Fe(CO)4 had at least two vq—o vibrations. Although metal carbonyls have broad vC—o absorptions in the gas phase, much more overlapped than in solution or in a matrix, the presence of the two Vc—o bands of Fe(CO)4 was clear. These two bands show that in the gas phase Fe(CO)4 has a distorted non-tetrahedral structure. The frequencies of these bands were close to those of Fe(CO)4 isolated in a Ne matrix at 4 K (86). Previous matrix, isolation experiments (15) (see Section I,A) has shown that Fe(CO)4 in the matrix had a distorted C2v structure (Scheme 1) and a paramagnetic ground state. This conclusion has since been supported by both approximate (17,18) and ab initio (19) molecular orbital calculations for Fe(CO)4 with a 3B2 ground state. The observation of a distorted structure for Fe(CO)4 in the gas phase proved that the distortion of matrix-isolated Fe(CO)4 was not an artifact introduced by the solid state. [Pg.300]

The axially symmetric metal carbonyl fragments M(CO)n (n = 1, 3, 4) have three outpointing hybrid orbitals with a high proportion of s and p orbital character, which are suitable for forming cluster skeletal molecular orbitals (77, 78, 238). The number and radial characteristics of these frontier molecular orbitals, which are illustrated schematically in Fig. 26a, are reminiscent of the frontier orbitals of a main group diatomic hydride fragment E—H, where E = C or B (Fig. 26b). To describe this similarity the term isolobal has been introduced (77). Molecular orbital... [Pg.41]
