Mulliken s conference in 1952 was a "watershed," marking the coming of age of the discipline of quantum chemistry, which Mulliken equally freely called chemical physics. 141 Coulson wrote a friend that "all the experts will be there, though the total number is limited to twenty-five."142 In fact, it was mostly an American group, joined by Coulson, Lennard-Jones, W. Moffit, and M. P. Barnett from England, Masao Kotani from Tokyo, and P. O. Lowdin from Uppsala.

Balint-Kurti and Karplus[28] implemented an earlier suggestion of Moffit[29] for the evaluation of matrix elements of the Hamiltonian by transforming the AOs to an orthogonalized set. If carried out correctly, this involves no approximations. The method was applied to ab initio and empirically corrected calculations of LiF, F2, and Fj. The transformation of the matrix elements to the orthogonalized form can be quite time consuming for large bases. 

Subunits of myosin. Hanafusa (97.,98) found that isolated rabbit myosin and HMM underwent denaturation when cooled to temperatures ranging from -10° to -196°C followed by immediate thawing. Denaturation was measured by an increase in viscosity, change in absorbance at 278 nm and change in the optical rotatory dispersion coefficients, a0 and b0, in the Moffit-Young equation. The absolute value of b0 decreased while that of a0 increased with a decrease in the freezing temperature. 

As it is easily derived from Eqs. 6.4-18, the relations are valid also for birefringence and dichroism. As far as optical activity in the UV/VIS range is concerned transformations on this basis have already been widely used for decades to correlate circular-dichroism bands and Cotton effects, i.e. anomalies of the optical rotatory dispersion (Moffit and Moscowitz, 1959 Blout et al., 1967).
