Modulus to weight

Grayish metal hexagonal close-packed crystal system, lattice constant, a=2.286 A and c=3.584 A density 1.85 g/cm permeable to x-rays highly ductile modulus to weight ratio very high, elastic modulus 44.5 x 10 at 25°C (for hot-pressed block and sheet) melting point 1,287°C vaporizes at 2,471°C sound transmission velocity 12,600 m/sec reflectivity (white hght) 55% thermal neutron absorption cross-section 0.0090 barns/atom electrode potential, Be/Be2+(aq) 1.85 V electrical resistivity 3.36 x 10-i° ohm.m (at 20°C). [Pg.98]

Al—Li. Ahoys containing about two to three percent lithium [7439-93-2] Li, (Fig. 15) received much attention in the 1980s because of their low density and high elastic modulus. Each weight percent of lithium in aluminum ahoys decreases density by about three percent and increases elastic modulus by about six percent. The system is characteri2ed by a eutectic reaction at 8.1% Li at 579°C. The maximum soHd solubiHty is 4.7% Li. The strengthening precipitate in binary Al—Li ahoys is metastable Al Li [12359-85-2] having the cubic LI2 crystal stmcture, and the equhibrium precipitate is complex cubic... [Pg.113]

A higher TYPE 2 restriction caused by a better mixing in the system with PTM 0(650) would increase the stiffness of the oligomeric chain, and this should result in a higher modulus. As the PTMO molecular weight increases, the encapsulation of oligomeric chains by condensed TEOS species would become more difficult. Such a decrease in the TYPE 2 restrictions would make the PTMO chains less stiff and, as a result, cause the modulus to decrease. [Pg.363]

In an investigation of the birefringence and stress relaxation of Kraton 101 cast from solution in toluene and in methyl ethyl ketone, Wilkes and Stein (33) considered the relaxation modulus to be a weighted average of the moduli of the pure polybutadiene and polystyrene phases. Ferry and co-workers, in their investigations of time-temperature superposition in polymethacrylates with relatively long side chains, found the com-... [Pg.421]

This research showed that bamboo has high tensile, flexural, and straining capacities. The tests also indicated that the strength-to-weight ratios are excellent for tension, compression, and flexure in all types of bamboo (14). However, bamboo has three major weaknesses low modulus, low bond stress, and high water absorption which leads to decay. These weaknesses are the major reasons why bamboo is not used widely in todays modem construction field. Many researchers have attempted to reduce the water absorption potential by using paint (2,6),... [Pg.248]

We have compared these theoretical predictions of the low-frequency modulus to experimental measurements on compressed emulsions and concentrated dispersions of microgels [121]. The emulsions were dispersions of silicone oil (viscosity 0.5 Pas) in water stabilized by the nonionic surfactant Triton X-100 [102, 121]. The excess surfactant was carefully eliminated by successive washing operations to avoid attractive depletion interactions. The size distribution of the droplets was moderately polydisperse with a mean droplet diameter of 2pin. The interfacial energy F between oil and water was 4mJ/m. The contact modulus for these emulsions was thus F 35 kPa. The volume fraction of the dispersed phase was easily obtained from weight measurements before and after water evaporation. Concentrated emulsions have a plateau modulus that extends to the lowest accessible frequencies, from which the low-frequency modulus Gq was obtained. Figure 11 shows the variations of Gq/E"" with 0 measured for the emulsions against the values calculated in the... [Pg.141]
