Modified melt viscosity

Blends with styrenic block copolymers improve the flexibiUty of bitumens and asphalts. The block copolymer content of these blends is usually less than 20% even as Httie as 3% can make significant differences to the properties of asphalt (qv). The block copolymers make the products more flexible, especially at low temperatures, and increase their softening point. They generally decrease the penetration and reduce the tendency to flow at high service temperatures and they also increase the stiffness, tensile strength, ductility, and elastic recovery of the final products. Melt viscosities at processing temperatures remain relatively low so the materials are still easy to apply. As the polymer concentration is increased to about 5%, an interconnected polymer network is formed. At this point the nature of the mixture changes from an asphalt modified by a polymer to a polymer extended with an asphalt. [Pg.19]

Although the prime function of plasticisers in cellulose acetate is to bring the processing temperature of the compound below the polymer decomposition temperature, it has additional values. The lack of mechanical strength for thermoplastic hyperbranched polymers makes them more suitable as additives in thermoplast applications. Hyperbranched polyphenylenes have been shown to act successfully as rheology modifiers when processing linear thermoplastics. By modifying the functional groups they can be used,for example, as crosslinkers in high solid or powder coatings and in thermosets. Because of their good miscibility and low melt viscosity, they find applications as melt modifiers and as blend components. Modified hyperbranched polymers, like alkyl chain substituted poiy(ether)s and po-ly(ester)s sometimes exhibit amphiphilic behavior.They can, therefore, be used as carriers for smaller molecules,for example, dyestuff into polypropylene. [Pg.275]

Plasticizers and flexibilizers are incorporated into an adhesive formulation to provide it with flexibility and/or elongation. Plasticizers may also reduce the melt viscosity of hot melt adhesives or lower the elastic modulus of a solidified adhesive. Similar to diluents, plasticizers are nonvolatile solvents for the base resin, and by being incorporated into the formulation, they separate the polymer chains and enable their deformation to be more easily accomplished. Plasticizers generally affect the viscoelastic properties of the base resin whereas diluents simply reduce the viscosity of the system. Whereas diluents result in brittle, hard adhesive systems, plasticizers result in increased flexibility and lower modulus. The temperature at which polymers exhibit rubbery properties (i.e., the glass transition temperature) can also be modified by incorporating plasticizers. [Pg.23]
