Moderated neutrons

Moderators. Neutrons are most effectively slowed by collisions with nuclei of about the same mass. Thus the best moderators are those light atoms which do not capture neutrons. These are H, " He, Be and C. Of these He, being a gas, is insufficiently dense and Be is expensive and toxic, so the common moderators are highly purified graphite or the more expensive heavy water. In spite of its neutron-absorbing properties, which as mentioned above must be offset by using enriched fuel, ordinary water is also used because of its cheapness and excellent neutronmoderating ability. [Pg.1260]

The Li nucleus can absorb a fast (above 3 MeV) neutron to produce a tritium nucleus, an alpha particle, and a slower neutron. A moderated neutron can be absorbed by a Li nucleus to produce a tritium and an alpha. Neutronic calculations indicate that a thick sphere of natural lithium could breed about 1.8 tritium atoms for each tritium atom burned in a fusion reaction (1 ). Structure and portions of the volume left open for fueling or driver beams reduce the 1.8 tritium breeding ratio. If the ratio falls below 1.0, it may be increased by addition of a neutron multiplier such as Be or Pb, and by isotopically enriching the Li in °Li. [Pg.498]

In general, only nuclides with high capture cross sections lead to appreciable chain branching at moderate neutron fluxes. An important example of a pile poison or a high neutron absorber is the 9.2-hr Xe138 which has been discussed in Section IV. In this case, the burn up is appreciable even at fluxes of the order of 5 X 1012 neutrons/cm2/sec. The neutron capture process in the 135 mass chain is indicated below (61) ... [Pg.337]

Yttrium is also a deoxidizer of vanadium, and its addition improves the ductility of nodular cast iron. Yttrium oxides increase the resistance of ceramic materials to heating due to an increase in melting temperature. Yttrium hydrate is used as temperature stabilizer both to increase the stability of heating alloys and to moderate neutrons in nuclear reactors (Luckey and Venugopal 1978 Greinacher 1981 Jezowska-Trzebia-towska et al. 1990). [Pg.1196]

EINAA Epithermal INAA uses partly energy-moderated neutrons with energies between those of thermal neutrons (0.025 eV) and fast neutrons at 1 MeV for stronger activation of trace elements relative to the major elements. [Pg.1580]

The formation of harder neutron spectrum has been influenced by LBC using, thus the higher value of CBR has been provided, which has had a key part in reaching the EUU biggest value. The calculations have demonstrated that for sodium coolant, which can moderate neutrons more effectively, it is hard to provide the reactor criticality if it has been made up by depleted uranium. [Pg.151]

During the interchange of neutrons in a neutron moderated system of finite size, comprising bodies of any size disposed in a neutron moderator, neutrons may be lost to the chain reaction in four ways by absorption or capture in the uranium content of the bodies without producing fission by absorption or capture in the moderator... [Pg.777]

After leaving the moderator, neutrons have to be guided to the sample and then, to the detector. During this process, the state of the neutron, or the shape/size of the beam may have to be changed. Pieces of instrumentation that serve these purposes may be called (neutron) optical devices. [Pg.1543]

O Fig. 57.3 represents a fairly hard neutron spectrum. Normally, the Maxwell distribution of the fully moderated neutrons dominates the spectrum at low neutron energies. [Pg.2623]

Thermal or moderated neutrons arc in thermal equilibrium with the atoms of the moderator, and their velocities of 2200 m/s at 20 C correspond to an energy of 0.0253 eV. [Pg.769]

It Is to be noted that all three groups refer to neutrons within the fuel. Moderated neutrons are not included except those which are scattered by moderators Internal to the fuel Thus In the case of II Reactor each group will have a small oonponent from neutrons mattered by water Internal to the fhel. However the coiqpooent will be small. [Pg.23]
