Model predictive control (MPC) was developed in the 1970s and 1980s to meet control challenges of refineries. The advantages of MPC are most evident when it is used as a multivariable controller integrated with an optimizer. The greatest MPC benefits are realized in applications with dead-time dominance, interactions, constraints, and the need for optimization. As opposed to a traditional control loop, where the controller responds to a difference (error) between the set point and measurement, the predictive controller uses a vector difference between the future trajectory of the set point and the predicted trajectory of the controlled variable as its input (Figure 2.52). [Pg.202]

Very few unbiased publications have appeared in the literature comparing control effectiveness using MPC versus a well-designed conventional control system. Most of the MPC applications reported have considered fairly simple processes with a small number of manipulated variables. There are no published reports that discuss the application of MPC to an entire complex chemical plant, with one notable exception. That is the work of Ricker (1996), who compared MPC with conventional PI control for the Eastman process (TE problem). His conclusion was there appears to be little, if any, advantage to the use of nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) in this application. In particular, the decentralized strategy does a better job of handling constraints—an area in which NMPC is reputed to excel.51... [Pg.10]

A key reason why MFC has become a major commercial and technical success is that there are numerous vendors who are licensed to market MFC products and install them on a turnkey basis. Consequently, even medium-sized companies are able to take advantage of this new technology. Payout times of 3-12 months have been reported. In control applications, for which conventional multiloop control systems are not satisfactory, an alternative approach, multivariable control, can be advantageous. In multivariable control, each manipulated variable is adjusted based on the measurements of all the controlled variables rather than only a single controlled variable, as in multiloop control. The adjustments are based on a dynamic model of the process that indicates how the manipulated variables affect the controlled variables. Consequently, the performance of multivariable control, or any model-based control technique, will depend heavily on the accuracy of the process model. A specific type of multivariable control, model predictive control, has had a major impact on industrial practice, as discussed in Chapter 20. [Pg.7]

Model predictive control offers several important advantages (1) the process model captures the dynamic and static interactions between input, output, and disturbance variables, (2) constraints on inputs and outputs are considered in a systematic manner, (3) the control calculations can be coordinated with the calculation of optimum set points, and (4) accurate model predictions can provide early warnings of potential problems. Clearly, the success of MPC (or any other model-based approach) depends on the accuracy of the process model. Inaccurate predictions can make matters worse, instead of better. [Pg.386]

Finally, a steady 1-D lumped stack model is introduced which uses a 0-D lumped approach for each cell in the stack. The model takes the current and power produced by each cell in the stack as input and predicts the 1 -D temperature distribution across the cells of the stack. Such models have the advantage of faster calculation time and are thus better suited for initial design calculations and control system modeling. In this model, each fuel cell is divided into three components, air channel, fuel channel and solid region (electrodes, electrolyte and the interconnect). The control volumes used for air and fuel channel components are shown by the dashed lines in Figure 5.6. The effect of the disturbance on the controlled variable These models can be based on steady-state or dynamic analysis. The performance of the feedforward controller depends on the accuracy of both models. If the models are exac t, then feedforward control offers the potential of perfect control (i.e., holding the controlled variable precisely at the set point at all times because of the abihty to predict the appropriate control ac tion). However, since most mathematical models are only approximate and since not all disturbances are measurable, it is standara prac tice to utilize feedforward control in conjunction with feedback control. Table 8-5 lists the relative advantages and disadvantages of feedforward and feedback control. By combining the two control methods, the strengths of both schemes can be utilized. [Pg.730]
