Mendeleev s reluctance toward reduction was not widely shared. One of the codiscoverers of the periodic system, the German Lothar Meyer, accepted the possibility of primary matter and supported Prouf s hypothesis. He was also happy to draw curves through numerical data, including his famous plot of atomic volumes that showed such remarkable periodicity that it helped in the acceptance of the periodic system. Nonetheless, prior to Thomson s discovery of the electron, no accepted model of atomic substructure existed to explain the periodic system, and the matter was still very much in dispute. [Pg.35]

With MW, students can interact with the interface (Fig. 11.6) and visualize what happens to collections of interacting atoms and molecules imder different conditions and rules (Xie Tinker, 2006). MW can also help increase students imderstand-ing of submicro scale phenomena through developing more scientifically accurate mental models of atoms and molecules (Pallant and Tinker, 2004). These models, in turn, could support students to effectively predict or explain chemical phenomena at different representational levels. [Pg.259]

The initial purpose of pioneer quantum mechanics was to provide the theoretical framework to account for the structure of hydrogen and the nuclear model of atoms in general. The final result, a quantum theory of atomic structure can be discussed in terms of the time-independent Schrodinger equation, in its most general form... [Pg.345]

The aim of many of the studies of diffusion is to relate the measured diffusion coefficient to a mechanism of diffusion. By this is meant a model of atomic jumps that accurately reproduces the diffusion coefficient and the measured concentration profile over a wide range of temperatures. This objective has been most pronounced... [Pg.212]

In the early part of the twentieth century, then, a simple model of atomic structure became accepted, now known as the Rutherford nuclear model of the atom, or, subsequently, the Bohr-Rutherford model. This supposed that most of the mass of the atom is concentrated in the nucleus, which consists of protons (positively charged particles) and neutrons (electrically neutral particles, of approximately the same mass). The number of protons in the nucleus is called the atomic number, which essentially defines the nature of... [Pg.229]

The calculations for 21 elements showed that the values of Ps-parameters are similar to corresponding values of total energy of valence electrons according to the statistic model of atom. [Pg.95]

This model of atomic oscillators, in which we assume bound valence electrons, is also perfectly valid for metals, except that in this case we must set coq = 0. [Pg.117]
