Model airplane glue

Inhalant is a term applied to an estimated 1,000 to 1,400 legal products used in households, industry, businesses, and medical settings. These products are as common as a felt-tip marker, a bottle of correction fluid or nail polish remover, a tank of gasoline, a tube of model airplane glue, air freshener or vegetable cooking spray, or a can of silver spray paint. 

Ethyl acetate is a common organic solvent with a characteristic odor. It is used in nail polish remover and model airplane glue. 

Solvent-based adhesives like model airplane glue contain a volatile solvent that dissolves part of the plastic and when dry forms a solvent weld. 

Acetone, CH3-CO-CH3, is the simplest ketone and has many uses as a solvent, especially for paint. Many of us are familiar with acetone-based fingernail polish remover. And methyl ethyl ketone is the solvent in model airplane glue.

In the category of diluent, nonreactive adhesives, one example is model airplane cement (often cellulose nitrate in a mixture of ketones and aromatic solvents). As a coating we would call it a lacquer. Aqueous solutions of natural and synthetic gums are used in library paste. Some of the popular white glues for paper and wood are simply poly(vinyl acetate) emulsions with a small amount of plasticizer. All of these materials solidify after contacting the surface as a liquid by loss of solvent or diluent. Evaporation or diffusion into a porous substrate may be involved.
