Mixotrophic growth

Methanogens use methanogenic substrates for biosynthetic needs. Also, mixotrophic growth (e.g. with methanol + H2-CO2) is possible with some organisms. Table 1 and the reviews mentioned above provide key references on use of these substrates.

Ehrlich (1976) has provided preliminary evidence for mixotrophic growth in strain Bill 45, a bacterium isolated from a marine ferromangemese nodule. Manganese stimulated the assimilation of tritiated L-leucine and the oxidation of Mn(II) appeared to be coupled to ATP synthesis. The ability of an org2inism to grow mixotrophically could be an advantage in marine environments where both Mn(II) and organic materials are concentrated by sorption to MnOzCs) and other oxide surfaces.
