Because almost all materials used in the pharmaceutical industry have NIR spectra, the use of NIR for assuring blend homogeneity may prove to be a valuable application. Ciurczak [24,25] reported some of the first work on this subject. His work involved the use of a fiber probe to collect spectra from various locations in the mixer. Spectral matching and principal component analysis (PCA) were used to measure how similar the powder mix in a particular portion of the blender was to a predetermined good, or complete, mix. The match index or PCA scores were plotted versus time to assess the optimal blending time. [Pg.81]

Whether one is able to fit mixture models with distinct random effects parameters for each subpopulation is dependent on the nature of the underlying mixture. The results of enzymatic determinations of ceruloplasmin are often expressed in arbitrary units, and the values judged in the light of a series of results obtained in normal subjects by the same method. Expression of the enzyme activity in milligrams of ceruloplasmin per unit volume of serum is also possible. The relation between oxidase activity and the amount of ceruloplasmin in serum can be determined by measuring in parallel samples of sera both the oxidase activity and the change of optical density at 610 mix before and after the addition of ascorbic acid or cyanide. On the basis of the known absorbancy index, the ceruloplasmin concentration can be calculated (see Section 2.2.1) and the relation between it and the enzyme activity determined. Alternatively, purified human ceruloplasmin can be used for standardization of the enzymatic method. The ceruloplasmin content of the purified preparation can be determined colorimetrically or, in the case of a highly purified preparation, by nitrogen analysis. Predetermined increments of ceruloplasmin can then be added to aliquots of a selected serum. It is convenient to select a serum with relatively low ceruloplasmin level to start with. Serum of a patient with Wilson s disease, some of whom have no measurable amount of enzyme activity, would be ideal for the purpose however, Walshe (W5) has recently found an inhibitor in these sera. [Pg.12]

The polymer chains dissolved in a relatively mild impeller mixer have been mechanically broken the least consequently, these solutions have large [1-n] values. In general, the evaluation of the separation criterion is subject to much the same criticisms as is the entropy index. In this case, however, the problem is even more difficult due to the fact that absolute changes in entropies and internal energies are needed. More work is needed to establish these quantities for particulate suspensions, with the inevitable particle-particle interactions and excess free energies of mixing. Textbooks on thermodynamics are remarkably silent on the subject of thermodynamics of particulate systems and suspensions. [Pg.547]

When comparing PUFA to MUFA on a population level (n = 538), the Pizarra study from Spain showed less IR, measured by HOMA, in individuals who reported consuming a high MUFA (olive oil) or mixed oil diet compared to those who consumed a diet rich in sunflower oil (high n-6 PUFA Soriguer et al., 2006). The subjects with higher OA levels in plasma phospholipids had the lowest odds ratio for IR. Similarly, when comparing the fatty acid composition of serum phospholipids to the beta-cell function index of HOMA, and adjusted for age, BMI and an IR index, Rojo-Martmez et al. (2006) documented that of the fatty acid classes, only MUFA accounted for the variation in this index.
