Basically, the technique is as follows. A small (but constant) volume of sediment, soil or cuttings is placed into the mixer cell along with two ceramic or stainless steel ball-bearings, and water is added to bring the remaining headspace to 10 cc. The mill is sealed and placed in a SPEX/Mixer-Mill and agitated for about five minutes. The cell is then immersed into a hot-water bath at 90°C for three minutes. A 1 ml aliquot of gas-free water is injected into the cell through a septum-sealed side arm on the cell, and then a 1...

The reactions were conducted in a custom-made 0.5 x 2.0 in screw-capped stainless steel vial and milled with an 0.250 in aluminum oxide ball-bearing in a Spexx certiprep mixer/mill 8000 M for approximately 17 h. Various para-substituted aryl methyl benzoates were reduced using a 5 1 ratio of lithium chloride sodium boro-hydride. At the conclusion of the reaction, the products were washed with 10% HC1 and the remaining solids were dried over a Hirsch funnel. Liquid products were isolated by extraction from a minimal amount of ethyl acetate. 

A mixture of aldehyde 1 (0.5 mmol), malononitrile (0.5 mmol) and Hantzch 1,4-dihydropyridine 2 (0.51 mmol) was introduced, together with a stainless ball of 7.0 mm diameter, into a stainless steel jar (5 mL). The same mixture vessels were also introduced into a second, parallel jar. The two reaction vessels were closed and fixed on the vibration arms of a ball-milling apparatus (Retsch MM200 mixer mill, Retsch GmbH, Haan, Germany) and vibrated vigorously at a rate of 1800 rpm (30 Hz) at room temperature for 90 min. 

The use of the vinyl polymer in fluid form offers distinct advantages to the manufacturer of vinyl products. The most important obvious advantage is the relatively lower cost of liquid processing equipment and accessories as compared to those required for processing of solid or powder thermoplastics. For example, a spread coating line, for example, knife or roll coater, even with appropriate unwind and takeup accessories, is less expensive than a banbury-mixer-mill calender configuration. 

Only a selection of commercially available mixing equipment has been described here. Indeed, the devices described all exist in a variety of configurations. In a ition, there are many items of equipment based on altogether different principles typical examples include jet mixers, in-line dynamic mixers, mills, valve homogenisers, ultrasonic homogenisers, etc. These, as well as many other types, have been discussed by Harnby et alp-K Oldshue and Nagata ... 

Fresh or Frozen Tissue and Cells Human cell cultures and most human tissues can be efficiently lysed using lysis buffer and protease or proteinase K. Fresh or frozen tissue samples should be cut into small pieces to aid the lysis. Mechanical disruption using a homogenizer, mixer mill, or mortar and pestle prior to lysis can also reduce the lysis time. Skeletal muscle, heart, and skin tissue have an abundance of contractile proteins, connective tissue, and collagen, and special care should be taken to ensure complete digestion using protease or proteinase K.
