Mitscherlich

In 1825 Michael Faraday isolated a new hydrocarbon from illuminating gas which he called bicarburet of hydrogen Nine years later Eilhardt Mitscherlich of the University of Berlin prepared the same substance by heating benzoic acid with lime and found it to be a hydrocarbon having the empirical formula C H ... [Pg.424]

In Section 3.1.1 we encountered the crystallographer and chemist Eilhardt Mitscherlich who around 1818 discovered the phenomenon of polymorphism in some substances, such as sulphur. This was the first recognition that a solid phase... [Pg.98]

A striking example of the importance of narrowing the focus in research, which is what the concept of the parepisteme really implies, is the episode (retailed in Chapter 3, Section 3.1.1) of Eilhard Mitscherlich s research, in 1818, on the crystal forms of potassium phosphate and potassium arsenate, which led him, quite unexpectedly, to the discovery of isomorphism in crystal species and that, in turn, provided heavyweight evidence in favour of the then disputed atomic hypothesis. As so often happens, the general insight comes from the highly specific observation. [Pg.159]

In 1836 Jons Jakob Berzelius considered eight seemingly unrelated experimental results and concluded that there was a common thread among them. The commonality he defined as catalysis. In doing tliis, Berzelius proposed that a catalytic force was responsible for catalytic action. The concept of catalysis is today considered by most researchers to be due to Berzelius, probably because of the popularity of his annual Handbook of Chemistiywhere he published his definition of catalytic action. For the next one hundred years many referred to the phenomenon as contact catalysis or contact action, as proposed by Mitscherlich. [Pg.224]

In 1834 Mitscherlich nitrated benzene to nitrobenzene. But it is only since 1842, when Zinin reduced nitrobenzene to aniline, that rapid development of the chemistry of nitro compounds and their application to organic industry has occurred ... [Pg.225]

In 1825 Michael Faraday (1791—1867) discovered an unknown substance that was produced from heated whale oil. Later, Eilhardt Mitscherlich (1794—1863) isolated this new compound and named it benzene. [Pg.21]

On February 24, 1829, Berzelius wrote to Eilhard Mitscherlich, "Wollaston s death grieves me. His specifications for making platina pliable were circulated at the same time as the news of his death. As I got iridium to cohere in an analogous manner, I was struck all the more by his simple method, went out into the laboratory, where I had a wet filter with platina on it, partly washed, which I pressed in a vice, dried, and ignited over a spirit lamp in a small platina crucible, and got it so coherent that it could no longer be broken with the fingers and could easily be cold-hammered. That s as far as I have yet gone. That was ten minutes work, then I had to let it wait for a better time (83). [Pg.425]

Mendeleev had a keen appreciation of art and literature. He sometimes wrote articles on art, and his study was furnished with pencil sketches of Lavoisier, Newton, Descartes, Galileo, Copernicus, Graham, Mitscherlich, Rose, Chevreul, Faraday, Dumas, and Berthelot drawn by his wife. His favorite author was Jules Verne, and his chief consolation... [Pg.664]

Benzene was discovered in 1825 by Michael Faraday who identified it from a liquid residue of heated whale oil. Faraday called the compound bicarburet of hydrogen and its name was later changed to benzin by Eilhardt Mitscherlich (1794—1863) who isolated the compound from benzoin. Benzene s formula indicates it is highly unsaturated. This would suggest benzene... [Pg.205]
