The article began life as an invited talk at the Chemical Heritage Foundation in Philadelphia and was followed by an article in the foundation s magazine, Chemical Heritage. 

The use of the older restricted version of the Pauli principle has persisted, however, and is routinely employed to develop the electronic version of the periodic table. Modern chemistry appears to be committing two mistakes. Firstly, there is a rejection of the classical chemical heritage whereby the classification of elements is based on the accumulation of data on the properties and reactions of elements. Secondly, modem chemistry looks to physics with reverence and the false assumption that therein lies the underlying explanation to all of chemistry. Chemistry in common with all other branches of science appears to have succumbed to the prevailing tendency that attempts to reduce everything to physics (11). This book is an outgrowth of a suggestion made by Otto T. Benfey when he and Anthony S. Travis were associate editor and editor, respectively, of a series of books about the history of modern chemical sciences to be published jointly by the American Chemical Society and the Chemical Heritage Foundation. That series is, unhappily, no more, but their encouragement eventually became this book, and I am greatly indebted to them for their help. Ted Benfey, for example, read and critiqued every chapter of this book, a record shared only by George F. and Ruth Ann Bertsch.
