Mitragyna stipulosa

In the oxindole series, the corynoxeine isomers have been found in old specimens of Mitragyna stipulosa, but the related tetrahydrocarboline derivative hirsuteine appears to be absent 66 however, young plants of the same species contain hirsutine (dihydrohirsuteine). 

This "psychedelic stimulant" is derived primarily from the bark of a West African tree called Pausinystalia or Corynantheyohimbe, although it is also present in other species of Corynanthe and in Aspidosperma quebran-choblanco and Mitragyna stipulosa. When this alkaloid is brewed as a tea and then drunk, its effects come on within forty-five minutes to an hour. The action is reportedly swifter if taken with 500 mg. vitamin C...

During the period under review several species of the Mitragyrm genus have been closely reexamined, but no new alkaloids have been isolated with the possible exception of 3-isoajmalicine (i) and uncarine-F 2), two bases known previously from in vitro experiments but recently isolated from plant material, apparently for the first time. The results of all these extractions have recently been summarized (3). Mitragyna parvifolia has been particularly carefully studied (i, 2, A-6) and the variations in alkaloid content in plants from eight different geographical sources in India and southeast Asia have been noted (3, 4) the seasonal variations in alkaloid content in plants grown in Poona and Ceylon have also been studied (6). A similar study of the alkaloid content of M. stipulosa forms the subject of another communication (7).
