Mass-analysed ion kinetic energy spectrometry (MIKES) A form of MS-MS product-ion scan that may be carried out on a reversed-geometry double-focusing mass spectrometer. [Pg.307]

More recently, Audier and McMahon have shown that the unimolecular dissociation spectrum of transient ions can be directly obtained from a simple manipulation of a series of FTICR spectra. The data arising from this approach very closely resemble those obtained from metastable dissociations in conventional sector spectrometers (MIKES), and it has been consequently dubbed metastable ion cyclotron resonance (MICR) spectrometry. Very briefly, the method functions as follows ... [Pg.65]

The most recent metastable defocusing technique, which is referred to as mass-analyzed ion kinetic spectroscopy (MIKES) by Beynon (77, 270, 277) and as direct analysis of daughter ions (DADI) by Maurer (278) requires the interchange of the source and collector positions in a double-focusing mass spectrometer of Nier-Johnson geometry. With... [Pg.271]

A similar technique applicable to reverse geometry mass spectrometers (magnetic sector before electrostatic analyser) is that of mass-analysed ion kinetic energy spectrometry (MIKES). In this technique the ion to be studied is isolated by the magnet and induced to fragment by collision activation in a small chamber filled with a gas such as helium. The product ions are then detected by scanning the electrostatic analyser voltage. [Pg.257]

The direct insertion of plant material into the mass spectrometer can give useful information on the constituents present, provided that sufficient data have already been accumulated from synthetic compounds and from conventional phytochemistry. Direct mass spectral analysis (MIKES) of whole freeze-dried mushrooms (Helvella esculenta) indicates the presence of gyromitrin (21 =... [Pg.243]

Finally we should keep in mind one very important principle The mass spectrometer is a separating system itself. Thus, a double focusing mass spectrometer is a double separating system one may be used as mass separator and the other one as ion spectrometric device as it is realized in DADI/MIKE spectrometry. Trends for the improvement of this type of mass spectrometry ( MS/MS ) by the addition of a third or even a fourth analyzer are going on Many applications have shown its excellent analytical potential (see Chapter g 67.68,82.83)... [Pg.69]
