Complete gross examination should be completed in all animals, including those that died during the experiments or were killed in moribund conditions. Prior to sacrifice of all animals, blood samples should be collected for differential blood counts. All grossly visible lesions, tumors, or lesions suspect of being tumors should be preserved. An attempt should be made to correlate gross observations with microscopic findings. 

In their 1949 study, Ferraro and Roizin. used larger numbers of ECTs (32-100). Although excessive by some standards in psychiatry, many patients in fact receive such larger numbers of shock treatments, usually spread over a number of years. After the fewest electroshocks, the researchers found evidence of cell death in the form of moderate nerve cell rarefaction and acellular areas, again proportionate to the current intensity and the number of ECT. Photographs of the microscopic findings were reproduced in both papers.

Gross lesions are absent and microscopic findings include degeneration and necrosis of proximal renal tubular epithelium with intact basement membrane, regeneration of the tubular epithelium and mineralization. The tubules contain granular and protein casts. In some animals, fibrinous arteritis of the large colon was also observed (Eubig et al, 2005 Morrow et al, 2005).

Electron microscopic findings are either normal or correspond to degenerative and sclerotic changes. While some authors describe virus-like particles [35, 84, 85], others point out that such particles were not found [72, 73]. 

Interference with homeostasis of mitochondrial DNA has been linked to segmental necrosis. Medications associated with this type of effect include zidovidine, which is used to treat HTV. Electron microscopic findings include marked increases in mitochondrial enlargement with vacuolation. Chemicals that block aerobic metabolism (e.g., 2,4-dinitro-phenol) have been used to experimentally produce a mitochondrial myopathy characterized in some instances by segmental necrosis.
