In order to quantify vitamin A values for humans within the metric system, therefore, international agencies have now introduced the biological equivalent of 1 microgram (1 meg) of retinol as the standard. In 1967, the FAO/WHO proposed that vitamin A allowances be expressed as the equivalent weight of retinol, and that the use of lU be discontinued. The United Kingdom adopted this change and coined the term Retinol Equivalent (RE). The U.S. Food and Nutrition Board (National Academy of Science, National Research Council) and Canada followed suit. The RE system of measurement takes into account the amount of absorption of the carotenes as well as the degree of conversion to vitamin A hence, it is more precise than the lU system. 

KPI system To speed up and anchor CIP in the organization, the companies that set the benchmark in this area establish a clear KPI system linking the operational performance metrics consistently and comprehensively to the overall objectives of the company - and these metrics have to be easily understood and reproduced within standard companywide reporting systems. For instance, at Clariant a number of different KPIs have been defined to track maintenance efficiency, but only a few (e.g., repair and maintenance costs/conversion costs) can really be tracked by the production team on the basis of standardized systems (Fig. 19.6). 

The relationships between the number of metric units and the number of USCS units are direct proportionalities. You may find it useful to memorize only one conversion in each of three categories mass, length, and volume. You can then use familiar metric-metric and/or USCS-USCS conversions to change units within each system of measurement. Although it can add a few steps to a problem, this approach minimizes the amount of memorization necessary.
