Methylethyl ketone

The purity of a synthetic preparation of methylethyl ketone (C4H8O) can be determined by reacting the ketone with hydroxylamine hydrochloride, liberating HCl (see Table 9.10). In a typical analysis, a 3.00-mL sample was diluted to 50.00 ml and treated with an excess of hydroxylamine hydrochloride. The liberated HCl was titrated with 0.9989 M NaOH, requiring 32.68 ml to reach the end point. Report the percent purity of the sample, given that the density of methylethyl ketone is 0.805 g/mL. 

The main by-products are formic acid, ethanol, methanol, acetaldehyde, acetone, and methylethyl ketone (MEK). When manganese acetate is used as a catalyst, more formic acid (=25%) is obtained at the expense of acetic acid. 

Isopropyl acetate is used as a solvent for coatings and printing inks. It is generally interchangeable with methylethyl ketone and ethyl acetate. 

Another approach is to use an easily oxidized substance such as acetaldehyde or methylethyl ketone, which, under the reaction conditions, forms a hydroperoxide. These will accelerate the oxidation of the second methyl group. The DMT process encompasses four major processing steps oxidation, esterification, distillation, and crystallization. Figure 10-16 shows a typical p-xylene oxidation process to produce terephthalic acid or dimethyl terephthalate. The main use of TPA and DMT is to produce polyesters for synthetic fiber and film.

Detectability may be a significant problem with homologous series of unsaturated compounds, particularly //-alkanes. For these compounds, refractive index detection or evaporative light-scattering, both of which are described elsewhere in the book, may be of use. Indirect photometry is a useful detection scheme for compounds that do not absorb in the UV. Acetone, methylethyl ketone, methyl propyl ketone, methyl isopropyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone, and acetophenone are added to an acetonitrile/water mobile phase, generating a negative vacancy peak when the nonchro-mophoric analyte emerges and a positive peak if the ketone is adsorbed and displaced.70 Dodecyl, tetradecyl, cetyl, and stearyl alcohols also have been derivatized with 2-(4-carboxyphenyl)-5,6-dimethylbenzimidazole and the derivatives separated on Zorbax ODS in a mobile phase of methanol and 2-propanol.71...

Another factor influencing the reactivities of polar particles is their nonspecific solvation. Since both the individual particles, namely phenol and peroxyl radicals and their complex are polar, rate constants must depend on the polarity of the medium, its permittivity s, in particular. This was confirmed in experiments with mixtures of benzene and methylethyl-ketone, which showed that kq diminishes as the concentration of methylethylketone decreases provided the hydrogen bonding between the benzene and methylethylketone molecules are taken into account [10]. This technique has been applied [47] to the determination of ethanol, methylethyl ketone, paraldehyde and acrolein in soils. Following extraction of the soil with methanol and gas purging the purge gas is trapped on a Tenax column. The purgate obtained by heating the Tenax column is analysed by gas chromatography and/or mass spectrometry. 

The practical effect of the condensation consists, therefore, in the conversion of methylene into > C=0. The same result is attained in a quite similar reaction by the action of nitrous acid on ketones (cf. the synthesis of diacetyl from methylethyl ketone). 

According to the vendor, the total cost for treating an estimated 9800 m of contaminated soil at the Sweden 3 Chapman site, in Sweden, New York, for a 12-month duration was 52/m of soil (D18722Y, p. 134). Soil at this site was contaminated with trichloroethene (TCE), tetrachloroethene (PCE), acetone, methylethyl ketone (MEK), methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK), toulene, and xylene.
