Methyl pivalate

Carboxylic acids such as acetic acid react with alcohols such as methanol or with methoxytrimethylsilane 13 a in the presence of trimethylchlorosilane (TCS) 14 in THF or 2-methyl-THF to give esters such as methyl acetate in 97% yield and hex-amethyldisiloxane 7. Even methyl pivalate can be readily prepared in 91% yield [111]. Reaction of a variety of carboxylic acids, for example N-benzoylglycine 329, with two equivalents of yS-trimethylsilylethanol 330 and with 14 has been shown to afford esters such as 331 in 98% yield [112, 112 a]. Likewise, silylated carboxylic acids react with silylated alcohols or thiophenols in the presence of 4-trifluoro-methylbenzoic anhydride and TiCl4/AgCl04 to furnish esters or thioesters in high yields [113, 114] (Scheme 4.43). [Pg.70]

Multinuclear Li and NMR and quantum-chemical investigations by Muller and coworkers showed that it is possible to determine the structure of active species in methacrylate polymerization in the presence of triethylaluminum (AlEts) in nonpolar solvents, such as toluene. Reaction of eibLi and trialkylaluminum with methyl pivalate (mpiv), in equimolar amounts, leads to an equilibrium of monomer 46 and dimer 47 complexes (eibLi mpiV"AlEt3) (n = 1, 2), consistent with kinetic studies. P-Keto acids. A new synthesis of /i-keto acids involves the reaction of dianions of carboxylic acids with esters.6 The intermediates are trapped with trimethylchlorosilane and isolated as the trimethylsilyl esters. For example, isobutyric acid is converted into the dianion (1) by treatment with 2 eq. of lithium diisopropylamide in THF at 0°. Addition of I eq. of methyl pivalate (2) and an excess of trimethylchlorosilane yields the... [Pg.273]

When polymethylmethacrylate is irradiated in the presence of ethyl mercaptan, it is reasonable to consider that radiation ejected electrons in the matrix are scavenged by the additive. Indeed, in aqueous solution the efficiency of capture of solvated electrons by ethyl mercaptan [158] is about 500 times higher than by methyl pivalate, a low molecular weight model of polymethylmethacrylate [158]. Dissociative electron attachment has been observed by mass spectrometry [159]... [Pg.225]

Furthermore, the hydrolysis of butyl acetate and methyl pivalate in benzene in the presence of KOH at 25 °C as well as the reaction of potassium phenolate with benzyl chloride in boiling acetonitrile are accelerated by addition of polyoxyethylene [183]. The catalytic effect of POE is augmented by an increase in the number of oxyethylene units, i.e. 1 <6< 12. PEO is also an interfacial catalyst of the reaction of phenol and 2,4,6-trimethylphenol with methyl iodide in water-chloroform and dichloromethane. The kinetic study of the reaction between benzyl chloride and potassium acetate in the presence of PEO of variable molecular weight in toluene and butanol has been performed with IR spectroscopy [184]. The dissolution of a reagent of poor solubility is apparently a rate-limiting step of the reaction in a solution of low polarity (toluene). The presence of PEO impurities in toluene has been detected. Moreover, effect of PEO and crown ethers as phase transfer catalysts has been compared. In a low-polarity solvent, oligoethylene oxides are more effective catalysts, while in a polar solvent (butanol) the effectiveness of PEO and crown ethers as phase transfer catalysts is similar. [Pg.40]

In poly(methyl methacrylate), -[-CH2—C(CH3)(COOCH3)4" signals can be expected from the methylene protons CH2, from the a-methyl protons CH3, and from the methyl ester protons COOCH3. The assignment of the signals from the three types of protons is made possible by comparison with the spectrum of methyl pivalate (CH3)3C—COOCH3. In both poly(methyl methacrylate) and methyl pivalate, the a-methyl protons and the methyl ester protons appear at the same position in the nmr spectrum. Information about the tacticity of the polymer can be obtained as described below. [Pg.82]
