Methyl phthalate

A particularly interesting case is the reaction of the enamino ketone (47), which under similar conditions gives the intermediate product (80), which then undergoes cyclization to the benzene derivative dimethyl 3-pyrrolidino-5-methyl phthalate (81). 

EM is assumed to be 109 M for all phthalate esters, and 3 x 109 M for all maleate esters m Eberson, 1964. The reaction is eighty times faster than that of methyl phthalate under these conditions (using activation energy = 23 kcal mol-1)...

Recovery using methylene chloride or diethyl ether as eluting solvents was 86% or more for the monoesters depicted in Figure 2.40, except for the monomethyl phthalate. Relative to benzene, the polar character of methylene chloride and diethyl ether improves the wetability of the apolar sorbent having polar water molecules sorbed to the surface. The reduced recovery of mono-methyl-phthalate using methylene chloride or diethyl ether is probably due to incomplete sorption (i.e., the breakthrough volume may have been exceeded) rather than to incomplete desorption, because the more hydrophobic components were more completely desorbed. 

A Baker-Venkataraman rearrangement of 2-acetylphenyl methyl phthalate 753 forms the (3-diketone intermediate 754, which undergoes successive ring closures leading to the formation of benzo[ ]indeno[2.1-< ]pyran-l-,ll-dione 755 in high yield (Scheme 195) <2002TL4515>. 

Other PAEs, such as di-butyl phthalate (DBP) and di-methyl phthalate (DMP) show very low concentrations (Amir et al., 2005). Several studies have been carried out to assess the biodegradability and bioremediation of phthalate esters by composting and results have so far been promising. Some selected but hopefully representative findings of such studies are discussed hereafter.
