Methyl glyoxal toluene

Dihydro-2(l,3-dimethyluracil-5-yl)-l,3,4-oxadiazole was obtained in 53% yield by the [3+2] cycloaddition of diazomethane to the formyl group of l,3-dimethyl-5-formyluracil <1997T7045>. The reaction of l-acetyl-2-benzyl-hydrazine with methyl glyoxalate in toluene afforded an oxadiazolidine derivative <1996TL4323>.

Reaction rates in the presence of oxygen and nitric oxides [82], in the presence of hydroxyl radicals [89] or in the presence of mixtures of nitric oxides of varying composition [90] have been compared for various aromatics, m-xylene and trimethyl benzenes react substantially faster than the other xylenes, toluene, and in particular benzene. In the presence of nitric oxides, the following products are formed from aromatics with side chains particularly from toluene methyl glyoxal, dimethyl glyoxal, and biacetyl [83,84], larger quantities of m-nitrotoluene, 2-methyl-4-nitro-phenol, 2-methyl-4,6-dinitrophenol, benzaldehyde, benzyl nitrate, o-cresol, and p-nitrophenol [91-93]. 

Excellent resolution of the 2,4-dhiitrophenylosazones of glyoxal, glycerose and erythrose is provided by silica gel layers with the solvent systems toluene-glacial acetic acid-water (50 + 37 + 13) or methyl-cyclohexane-ethyl acetate-acetonitrile-water (58 + 32 + 9 + 1) [68].
