Reynolds equation was solved by the finite element method. Fraser et al. [42] performed FEM analysis on a metering screw channel that had slots in the flights. The slots increased the mixing ability of the screw by permitting flow between adjacent channels. 

Finally, as pointed out earlier, extruder screws have tapered channel sections. The various shaped pressure profiles that can be obtained in simple non-parallel plate geometry explain the experimentally observed pressure profiles in screw extruders. For example, in a common metering screw (with a constant channel depth feed section, followed by a tapered section and a constant channel depth metering section), under normal conditions the pressure profile exhibits a maximum in the tapered section with the pressure dropping in the metering section to the die pressure. 

The chips move down the preheater pressure vessel and are removed from the bottom by a scraper arm that breaks up the column of material, delivering it to a metering screw conveyor. The speed of this conveyor determines the production rate while delivering the preheated material to the refiner.

Conveying gas is blown tangentially by means of a blower into the tube base entering opposite a wet-feed metering screw. As a result, the gas disperses the wet feed by intense mixing. Product film is created by the inertial force, which threads its way upward in a spiral path until it reaches the exhaust port.
