The therapeutic potential of very low-molecular-weight fucoidans for the prevention of blood restenosis has also been demonstrated in animal models (Deux et al., 2002). A restenosis is often seen after the introduction of a balloon into an artery that has been narrowed by a plaque of atheroma, in order to restore the caliber of the artery (angioplasty operation) the insertion of a stent (a metal endoprosthesis) into the artery then maintains its integrity.
