A unique application of the solid oxygen electrolytes is in dre preparation of mixed oxides from metal vapour deposits. For example, the ceramic superconductors described below, have been prepared from mixtures of the metal vapours in the appropriate proporhons which are deposited on the surface of a solid electrolyte. Oxygen is pumped tluough the electrolyte by the application of a polarizing potential across the electrolyte to provide the oxidant for the metallic layer which is formed. 

Hollomon s ethos, combined with his ferocious energy and determination, and his sustained determination to recruit only the best researchers to join his group, over the next 15 years led to a sequence of remarkable innovations related to materials, including man-made diamond, high-quality thermal insulation, a vacuum circuit-breaker, products based on etched particle tracks in irradiated solids, polycarbonate plastic and, particularly, the Lucalox alumina envelope for a metal-vapour lamp. (Of course many managers besides Hollomon were involved.) A brilliant, detailed account of these innovations and the arrangements that made them possible was later written by Guy Suits and his successor as director, Arthur Bueche (Suits and Bueche 1967). Some of these specific episodes will feature later in this book, but it helps to reinforce the points made here about Hollomon s coneeption of broad research on materials if I point out that the invention of translucent alumina tubes for lamps was... 

Perhaps because of inadequate or non-existent back-bonding (p. 923), the only neutral, binary carbonyl so far reported is Ti(CO)g which has been produced by condensation of titanium metal vapour with CO in a matrix of inert gases at 10-15 K, and identified spectroscopically. By contrast, if MCI4 (M = Ti, Zr) in dimethoxy-ethane is reduced with potassium naphthalenide in the presence of a crown ether (to complex the K+) under an atmosphere of CO, [M(CO)g] salts are produced. These not only involve the metals in the exceptionally low formal oxidation state of —2 but are thermally stable up to 200 and 130°C respectively. However, the majority of their carbonyl compounds are stabilized by n-bonded ligands, usually cyclopentadienyl, as in [M(/j5-C5H5)2(CO)2] (Fig. 21.8). 

The palladium compound [Pd(CNcy)2]3 has been made by metal vapour synthesis, from Pd atoms and a solution of cyNC at 160 K. It has an analogous structure [Pd3(CNcy)3( 2-CNcy)3] [60].
