Metal-tolerant plant

Two processes are involved in speciation. Firstly, the two populations must evolve sufficient ecological differences that they do not suffer from competitive exclusion. In the case of metal-tolerant ecotypes, this condition has been fulfilled. Secondly, they must evolve sufficient barriers to gene exchange that the two gene pools are effectively isolated, and will evolve independently. There are a number of ways in which this could occur, and the first stages of this have been observed in a number of studies of metal-tolerant plants. 

The geobotany field has also led to advanced discoveries of metal tolerant plants. These plants are not accumulators, but rather excluders. These plants are able to tolerate elevated metal contents in soils and colonize the site to stabilize possible transport. The... 

In order to reach these objectives, a genetic approach would be useful to generate metal-tolerant plants with high biomass efficient for bioextraction (Briat et al. 1999). 

To quantify images of parts of heavy-metal-tolerant plants (leaves of Elsholtzia splendens) in order to study the hyperaccum-mulation of Cu and Zn, the standard reference material, NIST SRM 1515 apple leaves, was doped, mixed and homogenized with analytes of defined concentration. The quantification was performed via an external calibration procedure by measuring the calibration curves. Another standard reference material, NIST SRM 1547 Peach Leaves, was used to validate the analytical procedure (44, 45).
