Metal swarfs

There are, however, certain acid-based materials which can primarily be construed as cleaners. One such type of material is used in the cleaning of aluminium cans prior to treating and lacquering. Such cleaners are normally based on sulphuric or phosphoric acid, with, generally, additions of hydrofluoric acid and surfactants. These materials are sprayed on to pre-formed cans to remove the lubricant used during the can-forming operation. The fluoride is present to enhance the removal of fines of metal swarf in the cans as well as to remove the oxide film. 

The outlet pipe must always be from the lowest point, but may have a short internal upstand so that any dirt such as pipe scale or metal swarf will be trapped and not taken around the circuit.

Horizontal vessels are normally used as settlers in order to provide a large area of phase interface. It is generally necessary to conduct experiments to ascertain the coalescence rate. The settling area can usually be reduced by the use of coalescing aids such as mesh and metal swarf. In recent years, attempts have been made to use an electrostatic field as a coalescence aid. Mumford and Thomas (1972) and Jeffreys and Mumford (1974) have described various methods for reducing the overall size of the settlers. In many instances, differential contact (DC) packings arc used that are claimed to act as excellent coalescence aids. 

The most common metal swarfs are iron-based [9,10] and produced by the machine tool and automobile industries. The resulting fine Fe particles oxidize in storage and form magnetite and hematite. Because they also contain flammable machine oils, this oxidation makes them pyrophoric and hence a liability. Because the particle surfaces are coated with oil, they cannot be incorporated in conventional cement. As demonstrated by Wagh and Jeong [3], the acid phosphate in the CBPC process acts like a detergent and exposes the surface of these particles to the acid-base reaction and binds them. 

For the compaction of dean processed metal swarf, two methods are available. The non-continuous confined volume punch-and-die process (Fig. 6.9-18 a) and the continuous compaction in the nip of two counter-rotating rollers (Fig. 6.9-18 b).

Fine particles removed by a cutting or grinding tool. Metal swarf means turnings, borings, chips, wires, clippings, and foil. 

For steel foundries, a 100 % use of return metal is uncommon, due to the amount of dissolved gas. Operators consider 60 % to be the maximum amount of return metal (feeders, scrap castings,...) in the charge metal. Swarf and turnings may cause excessive molten metal oxidation. 

Eye protection After a survey of potential eye hazards the most appropriate type of eye protection should be selected. Safety spectacles may be adequate for relatively low energy projectiles, e.g. metal swarf, but for dust, goggles would be more appropriate. For people involved in gas/arc welding or using lasers, special filtering lenses would be required. 

Basket centrifuges with plough discharge often have a hydraulic, variable speed drive, are of three-point support or overdriven construction (e.g. Broad-bent or Mirlees) and their diameters vary from 260 to 1500 mm (filtration areas from 0.13 to 2.9 m ). Applications of all types of basket centrifuges include separation of crystals (such as sugar where throughput rates up to 36 t/h have been reported ), nitro-cellulose, metal swarf or enamel frit, and lately also gypsum from gas desulphurization processes at coal-fired power stations. ...
