There are a number of useful synthetic applications of these reactions of chelated amino acid esters (Fig. 3-12). For example, if the attacking nucleophile is not a simple amine, but is another amino acid ester or an O-protected amino acid, then peptide or polypeptide esters are formed in excellent yields. This may be developed into a general methodology for the metal-directed assembly (and, in the reverse reaction, the hydrolysis) of polypeptides. 

The application of new bis-substituted dtc ligands containing various polyether and amide spacer groups has lead to the constmction of a wide range of metal-directed assembled bimetallic macrocycles and cryptands (Scheme 5).48 Cryptands can be assembled through careful choice of a suitable octahedral stereochemical directing metal centre such as iron(III) and cobalt(III).

The thermodynamically controlled synthesis gives rise to another advantage of metal-directed assembly the capability to correct mistakes within the assembly until the final product is formed. The reversibility of M-L bond formation means that large assemblies and the individual components are in equilibrium until a stable product is formed. Many small assemblies form in the reaction mixture, some of which continue to grow towards the final product while others fall apart and their components are recycled.

The control and fabrication of single compounds, and the organization of metal-organic units in ID coordination polymers or 2D coordination arrays is of interest in metallosuparmolecular engineering on surfaces. The key features and their role in the potential functionality of the particularly versatile nanoporous networks achieved by metal-directed assembly in vacuum are illustrated in Scheme 1. The work on the formation of supramolecular architectures on surfaces containing metal centers will here be divided into the two approaches illustrated in Scheme 2.
