The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has characterized "[t]he general aim of metabolomics. .. to identify, measure and interpret the complex, time-related concentration, activity and flux of endogenous metabolites in cells, tissues and other biosamples such as blood, urine and saliva."3 Taken together, the three "omics" disciplines represent a systemic and powerful approach to mapping cellular networks, allowing for faster and more predictive biology in terms of risk assessment, potential therapeutic benefit, as well as diagnosis. 

In comparison with other measurement methods, NMR has important strengths. Its great virtue is its noninvasive nature, allowing one to obtain spatially resolved metabolic profiles and to investigate metabolomics in vivo. 10 There is little or no sample preparation. It is nondestructive. It is information-rich with regard to the determination of molecular structures because it can detect different chemical groups of metabolites simultaneously.

The LTQ-FT mass spectrometer was introduced in late 2003 and, as expected, the main application discussed in the literature is for the analysis of proteins and peptides (Johnson et al., 2004 Syka et al., 2004). A recent book chapter (van der Greef et al., 2004) and a review article (Brown et al., 2005) discussed the application of the LTQ-FT to metabolomics. FTMS applications to dmg metabolism are still very new and dmg discovery research laboratories which have recently purchased the instmment are still in the process of developing and validating methods and approaches. To date, the frame in the discovery phase, within the global biomarker finding process, is the common aspect of all metabolomic works linked to AD. Thus, most of metabolomic studies have been focused in the search of new biomarker candidates in the apparition and development of AD with high impact on novel hypotheses generation. Currently, there is a growing need to reliably validate those findings by increasing the cohort of clinical patients, to measure and validate the potential of the revealed biomarkers.
