The availability of ECL technology from instrument providers such as Meso Scale Discovery (MSD) has enabled practical applications of electrochemiluminescent assays. The MSD platform uses carbon electrode plates that are available uncoated or coupled with biotin or streptavidin. Thus, the platform may be used with direct, indirect, and bridging formats.

Several immunoassays can now be performed with imaging-based ECL instruments manufactured by Meso Scale Discovery (Chap. 3, Fig. 3.7) [22, 23]. Approximately 150 immunoassays are currently available from this company. These include phosphoprotein and intracellular markers, cardiac markers, vascular markers and growth factors, fertility markers, Alzheimer s disease markers, hypoxia markers, toxicology, metabolic markers, bone markers, bioprocess assays, and cytokine and chemokine immunoassays. While batch reactors remain the workhorse in fine chemical production, the need to switch to continuous processes will increase the use of meso- and micro-structured reactors both at the laboratory scale (for discovery, process data determination, demonstration, small-scale production) and at the production level.
