2-Mercaptosuccinic acid

Thiomahc acid [70-49-5] (mercaptosuccinic acid), C H O S, mol wt = 150.2, is a sulfur analogue of malic acid. The properties of the crystalline, soHd thiomalic acids ate given in Table 6. The racemic acid has the following acid dissociation constants at 25°C pTf i — 3.30 pffc2 — 4.94.

It has been established that by mixing derivatives of acids having opposite rotation, the compounds had opposite, configurations. The (+) malic acid (XXIV) and (-) mercaptosuccinic acid (XXV) had opposite configurations.

To reach this target, bis-aminothiazoles, aromatic aldehydes, and 2-mercapto-propionic acid or 2-mercaptosuccinic acid were adsorbed on the neutral alumina support and were microwave-irradiated under solvent-free conditions (Scheme 56). The authors reported the high level of the reaction conversion, which gave the desired products 119 in excellent yields for a rather short time (up to 7 min). 

A telechelic polystyrene containing two carboxyl groups at one end of a polymer can be used as a macromonomer in a step polymerization with a diol or diamine to yield a polyester or polyamide containing graft chains of polystyrene. The required telechelic polymer is obtained by radical polymerization of styrene in the presence of 2-mercaptosuccinic acid.

Another interesting study describes the synthesis of large hexagonal close-packed Au NCSs from water-soluble mercaptosuccinic acid (MSA)-coated Au nanoparticles used as the building units. Au N Ps that form the superlattices can be interconnected by interpartide chemical bonding thanks to the mercaptosuccinic acid molecules over the Au nanoparticle surface [168] (Figure 3.15). 

The reaction of thiourea126 with Methylene Blue (MB) is enhanced by an addition of mercaptosuccinic acid. The oxidation of phenylthiourea with MB127 is unaffected by the addition of the corresponding disulfide. The reactions exhibited a zero-order dependence on MB and a first-order dependence on the thiourea. The kinetic features have been explained in terms of reaction between half-reduced MB radical and the thiourea molecule.
