Instead of using a furrowed or dimpled membrane support plate, Sobey [41] observed that a single flow deflector in a flat membrane channel could produce many vortices under oscillatory flow conditions, an effect named the vortex wave. An important feature of the vortex wave is that it could occur under low crossflow velocity conditions or with laminar flow so that it can be used for shear-sensitive fluids. Millward et al. [42] tested the effect of vortex waves on plasma filtration with waves produced by flow deflectors with cross-sectional area of 1 x 1 mm in a 2.25 mm high channel as shown in Figure 8.22. The aim was to improve membrane applications for the separation of plasma from cellular blood components for both donor... [Pg.209]

In the area of dense membrane applications for hydrogenation reactions a number of recent studies also report the use of proton conducting solid oxide membranes (Otsuka and Yagi [2.86], Panagos et al. [2.87], Mamellos and Stoukides [2.88]). As noted previously, this is an exciting class of new materials with significant potential applications. [Pg.26]

In Table 2.7, the comparison between the CO eonversion values obtained in different palladium-based MRs and the equilibrium ones is reported, demonstrating the capacity of palladium-based MRs to overcome the thermodynamie limits and to obtain high CO conversion. Chapter 7 reports a detailed assessment of selective membrane application for WGS process. [Pg.44]

CaTij Fe 03 materials are of great interest for membrane applications for a number of reasons. They have great chemical stability and an almost composition and temperature independent thermal expansion coefficient of 12 x 10 1/K. In addition, its cost is much lower compared to that of BSCF and LSCF. However, a serious drawback is its poor oxygen transport capability. Its oxygen fiux is about 0.02 ml/cm /min, around two orders of magnitude lower than that of BSCF. [Pg.99]
