Fibers emerging from the spinneret are cooled under controlled conditions, passing over guides and rollers to a take-up spool or bobbin. Often a finish is applied before windup to control static electricity and friction (Stevens 1993). Large-scale production machinery produces fiber at a rate of thousands of feet a minute. Polymers that can be melted within this range are typically melt spun and include polyesters, polypropylene, and nylon. Polymers that are solution spun include some acetates and lyotropic LCPs. Schematic diagrams of the spinning apparatus are reviewed and shown, for example, by Griskey [39] and have been well known for decades. [Pg.11]
