Medium effects, evaluation

The sampling operation involves collection of an aerosol sample that is representative of the particle size distribution and concentration of the sampled atmosphere. The efficiency of particle transport and collection operations are dependent on the particle size, sampling velocity, the geometry of the sampling apparatus and the properties of the collection medium. In the present work, a 37 mm diameter membrane filter (0.3 ym pore size) is the primary collection medium under evaluation. The filter is housed in a standard filter cassette and effects of filter-holder inlet geometry are also being investigated. [Pg.96]

Despite our increasing knowledge of the structures and reactions of organometallic intermediates, it is virtually impossible to plan complex ionic reactions by using known rate constants from simple model systems. Rate constants are potentially more useful when planning pericyclic reactions because they are easier to measure and because pericyclic reactions are much less susceptible to medium effects than ionic reactions. The rate constant for exchange increases by ca. 104 on changing the medium composition from purely aqueous to 99 5 mole % DMSO at 65°. Several solvent properties could be included in an LFER for medium effects (31).
