Mechanical strength method

Determination of the macromechanical strength of composite materials can characterize whether the micropolymer and the filler interface reach an ideal state, and this method is common. [Pg.79]

Pulpstones. Improvements have been made in the composition and speed of the grinding wheel, in methods of feeding the wood and pressing it against the stone, in control of power to the stones, and in the size and capacity of the units. The first pulpstones were manufactured from quarried sandstone, but have been replaced by carbide and alumina embedded in a softer ceramic matrix, in which the harder grit particles project from the surface of the wheel (see Abrasives). The abrasive segments ate made up of three basic manufactured abrasive siUcon carbide, aluminum oxide, or a modified aluminum oxide. Synthetic stones have the mechanical strength to operate at peripheral surface speeds of about 1200—1400 m /min (3900 to 4600 ft/min) under conditions that consume 0.37—3.7 MJ/s (500—5000 hp) pet stone. [Pg.258]

The LSDA approximation in general underestimates the exchange energy by 10%, thereby creating errors which are larger tlian the whole correlation energy. Electron correlation is furthermore overestimated, often by a factor close to 2, and bond strengths are as a consequence overestimated. Despite the simplicity of the fundamental assumptions, LSDA methods are often found to provide results with an accuracy similar to that obtained by wave mechanics HE methods. [Pg.184]

The tape-casting method makes possible the fabrication of films in the region of several hundred micrometers thick. The mechanical strength allows the use of such a solid electrolyte as the structural element for devices such as the high-temperature solid oxide fuel cell in which zirconia-based solid electrolytes are employed both as electrolyte and as mechanical separator of the electrodes. [Pg.542]

The most important feature of polymers obtained by these methods is their high mechanical strength, primarily their elastic moduli and tenacities that, in some cases, approach the theoretical values. It has been recognized that these mechanical properties are uniquely related to the existence of ECC with very perfect chain packing in fibrillar crystals. [Pg.216]

This is the most widely used naturally occurring rubber. The literature search shows that many research groups have prepared nanocomposites based on this rubber [29-32]. Varghese and Karger-Kocsis have prepared natural rubber (NR)-based nanocomposites by melt-intercalation method, which is very useful for practical application. In their study, they have found increase in stiffness, elongation, mechanical strength, and storage modulus. Various minerals like MMT, bentonite, and hectorite have been used. [Pg.34]

Trapped radicals on samples with different storage conditions and reaction conditions are usually determined by ESR. Modification of PVC by radiation-grafting technique is an attractive method to improve the mechanical strength, printing ink adhesion, and adhesive receptance. Wang... [Pg.870]

When water is used as the immersion liquid, the test is essentially the ASTM Standard Test Method (D570) for Water Absorption of Plastics.( ) Determinations of the relative rate of water absorption are important in evaluating the effects of moisture exposure on such properties as mechanical strength, electrical resistivity, dielectric... [Pg.30]

Beilken et al. [ 12] have applied a number of instrumental measuring methods to assess the mechanical strength of 12 different meat patties. In all, 20 different physical/chemical properties were measured. The products were tasted twice by 12 panellists divided over 4 sessions in which 6 products were evaluated for 9 textural attributes (rubberiness, chewiness, juiciness, etc.). Beilken etal. [12] subjected the two sets of data, viz. the instrumental data and the sensory data, to separate principal component analyses. The relation between the two data sets, mechanical measurements versus sensory attributes, was studied by their intercorrelations. Although useful information can be derived from such bivariate indicators, a truly multivariate regression analysis may give a simpler overall picture of the relation. [Pg.438]

In order to produce an adequate tablet formulation, certain requirements, such as sufficient mechanical strength and desired drug release profile, must be met. At times this may be a difficult task for the formulator to achieve, due to poor flow and compactibility characteristics of the powdered drug. This is of particular importance when one only has a small amount of active material to work with and cannot afford to make use of trial-and-error methods. The study of the physics of tablet compaction through the use of instrumented tableting machines (ITMs) enables the formulator to systematically evaluate his formula and make any necessary changes. [Pg.318]

Various materials can be produced by sol-gel methods monoliths, thin films, fibers, powders can. Controlling of the physical and chemical parameters of production process yields materials with precisely tailored parameters such as mechanical strength, transparency, size and distribution of the pores network7. The sol-gel derived materials may provide excellent matrices for a variety of organic and inorganic compounds. [Pg.353]

The mechanical strength of the surface layers of many of the oxide copper minerals is weak. Therefore, flotation of oxide copper ores using sulphidization method, can improve by reducing turbulence and attrition within the flotation cell [3],... [Pg.49]
