Mechanical separations process

This is mechanical separation process for removal of suspended sohds by passing the waste-water through a microscreen. A removal efficiency for TSS is 50-80% depending on the pore size of the microscreen to be used. 

The Terrazyme phase segregation technology was developed to be a volume reduction system for use on wastes with high water contents. It is a chemically enhanced, mechanical separation process for segregating waste into a liquid and a solid phase. 

Because of the toxicity of cadmium, its use was abandoned in the 1980 s. Nevertheless, by improving the quality of the raw materials and changing the reaction stoichiometry, it was possible to reproduce the quantum yield of the halophosphates, even without the addition of cadmium [5.373]. The absorption of the exciting UV radiation is strongly dependent on the particle size of halophosphate phosphors and decreases rapidly for particles larger than 3 pm. The particle size is influenced to some extent by the particle size of raw materials (calcium hydrogen phosphate) in the firing mixture. Mechanical separation processes (sieves) are used to free the fired product from undesired coarse and fine particles. 

It is not an exaggeration to say that the evaluation of mechanical separation process/equipment is performed based on the conception of yield and quality. For example, the widely used Newton efficiency is defined in the following manner. In the case of better separator, both the yield and the degree of quality improvement should have higher values. From another viewpoint, the recovery rate of useful component should have a higher value, and the intermix rate of the useless component into product should have lower values for the better separator. Fluid mechanics and mixing operations in various types of equipment, agglomeration as well as disintegration and mechanical separation processes, just to mention a few, are described by parameters, the dimensions of which only consist of three base dimensions Mass, Length and Time. An isothermal process is assumed The physical properties of the material system under consideration are related to a constant process temperature. The process relationships obtained in this way are therefore valid for any constant, random process temperature to which the numerical values of the physical properties are related. This holds true as long as there is no departure from the scope of the validity of the respective process characteristic verified by the tests. 

A demonstration unit sponsored by the Environemtal Protection Agency (EPA) to produce RDF at St. Louis proved the basic feasibility of mechanical separation processes, transport and storage techniques, and combustion of fluff RDF to replace 5 to 27 percent of the pulverized coal used in suspension-fired utility boilers. However, the refinement of equipment components and the technical and economic optimization of the basic technology still require a great deal of work. 

Connections with other courses in the curriculum, i believe that as educators, we should consider each of our courses to be a tree with roots and branches in other parts of the chemical engineering curriculum, rather than a silo of knowledge disconnected from the rest. It is for this reason in this book that I have made connections to courses in fluid mechanics, separations processes, reactor design, as well as the new chapter related to biochemical engineering ...
