Many theories have been suggested to explain the mechanism of migration and separation of analytes in the column. The oldest one, called the theoretical plate model, corresponds to an approach now considered obsolete but which nevertheless leads to relations and definitions that are universal in their use and are still employed today. [Pg.9]

As with most questions on particle size, the answer is very dependent on the definition used and the experimental technique. For a dynamic aerosol cloud, the correct definition is the aerodynamic particle size, which is the diameter of an equivalent sphere of unit density. An equivalent sphere is a conventional assumption in particle sizing, but for the aerodynamic size, the density is included to account for the momentum of the particle, i.e., both mass and velocity are important. The technique chosen for measurement must include these parameters, and impaction is the normally chosen technique, which also reflects the major deposition mechanism in the lung. On the basis of these ideas, biocompatibility was redefined a few years ago (2), as the ability to perform with an appropriate host response in a specific situation. Clearly this definition encompasses the situation where inertness is still required for the most appropriate response in some situations is indeed no response. A traditional bone fracture plate is most effective when it is attached mechanically to the bone and does not corrode no response of the tissue to the material is normally required. Even here, however, we have to concede that a material that could actively encourage more rapid bone healing might be beneficial so that a specific osteoinductive response would be considered appropriate. [Pg.483]
