Meat packing

Other industries that are traditionally located close to the source of raw materials include the steel (qv) industry, located close to iron ore the flour industry, close to wheat fields the meat-packing industry, close to gracing land for catde pulp and paper, close to forests and the mining industry, close to mines. The inorganic industry, including salts, ash, borax, and gypsum, has always been located near the source of the needed raw material. [Pg.88]

Symps of 25—30 DE are used as spray-drying aids in products such as coffee. High conversion symp, maltose symp, and 42-DE symp are used in jams and jeUies. Com symp is also used in table symps, baby food, meat packing, breakfast foods, salad dressing, pickles, dehydrated powdered foods, medicinal symps, textile flirnishings, adhesives, and numerous other products and processes. [Pg.296]

Today most salt is used to make caustic soda and chlorine (see Alkali and chlorine products, chlorine and sodiumhydroxide). These chemicals are used in thousands of household products. The next biggest use is for highway deicing. Other uses are for water softening, Hvestock feeds, meat packing, and foodstuffs. [Pg.413]

There has been only one major use for ozone today in the field of chemical synthesis the ozonation of oleic acid to produce azelaic acid. Oleic acid is obtained from either tallow, a by-product of meat-packing plants, or from tall oil, a byproduct of making paper from wood. Oleic acid is dissolved in about half its weight of pelargonic acid and is ozonized continuously in a reactor with approximately 2 percent ozone in oxygen it is oxidized for several hours. The pelargonic and azelaic acids are recovered by vacuum distillation. The acids are then esterified to yield a plasticizer for vinyl compounds or for the production of lubricants. Azelaic acid is also a starting material in the production of a nylon type of polymer. [Pg.490]

Many industrial workplaces are located in cold environments, such as cold storage, meat packing areas, and outdoor sites. In cold environments, clothing is the... [Pg.385]

In many process industries, food factories, meat packing plants, textiles plants, commercial laundries and other facilities, wide load swings are the norm rather than the exception, so that maintaining adequate steam purity is often very difficult. [Pg.276]

Small farmers in the USA find it difficult to use the services of packing houses and distributors, either because they are considered too small to bother with or because such services are owned by their large competitors. The four largest firms in the meat-packing industry control more than 80% of the beef market. There are other concerns over the power of the large corporations. Industry giants get free access to shelf space in supermarkets for popular manufactured items, whereas smaller companies must pay fees for similar access. [Pg.11]

The last source of NOC that has been a major source for health concern of infants is usage of rubber pacifiers and baby feeding bottles fitted with rubber nipples. NOC present in the rubber formulations can migrate into baby foods and drinks and into meat packed in rubber nettings. [Pg.1188]

This formula is designed to be diluted to 3-6 ouncas per gallon in hot water and to be applied as a foam to meat packing house walls and other surfaces. After an appropriate time, these surfaces should be thoroughly rinsed. [Pg.15]

One of the first significant empowerments of the fledgling FDA was when Congress enacted the Food and Drug Act (also known as the Wiley Act) in 1906 directed to address unhygienic conditions in Chicago s meat-packing plants (see Upton Sinclair s... [Pg.299]

By the early 1900s, there was considerable governmental concern regarding the purity of not only drugs but food as well, the meat packing industry having performed... [Pg.355]
