What is clear is that, while FTA is mostly used to provide a quantitative assessment of a failure condition, it remains fundamentally a quahtative analysis method due to the means that the FTA is developed [see NASA Fault Tree Handbook paragraph 1.2]. Nevertheless, the discipline the analyst goes through to consider each failure path methodically provides an excellent deductive method to provide a reasoned estimate of failure probability. An example of the combined use of x-ray fluorescence and x-ray powder diffraction techniques involved the collection of prosecution evidence in an attempted assassination attempt. The case involved the attempted assassination of a government minister. As shown in Fig. 13.3, the would-be assassin entered the beach property of the minister by means of a sandy pathway. He then hid in the copse of trees and later shot the minister (actually he shot the minister s son by mistake) as he came out of the house. While the victim was not killed, he was seriously injured. The accused was apprehended as he ran from the property. The prosecution case was built mainly on evidence used to place the accused at the scene of the crime. Sandals worn by the victim when he was captured had a quantity of sandy material on the soles— it had been raining immediately prior to the oime—and samples were taken of the material shortly after the arrest of the accused. The accused claimed that he had been walking on the shore immediately adjacent to the property (see Fig. 13.3). Sand samples were taken from the pathway to the house, as well as from the shore area where the accused claimed he had been. Unfortunately for the accused, it turned out that the sand used for the path was not taken from the shore adjacent to the house, but from a more accessible point some miles further up the coast.
