John Jones, 1701 extensively researched the medical effects of opium. Richard Meade, 1673-1754 wrote first English language book dedicated to poisonous snakes, animals, and plants. 

Real academic study of the Corpus Hermeticum begins with Richard Reitzenstein, the first to undertake the study of these texts with full scientific rigor [Poimandres, Leipzig, 1904). But naturally one should not underestimate some of his predecessors, such as Casaubon, Tiedemann, Menard, Pietschmann, nor even Mead (see above for all of these). Esotericism at the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth century helped to stimulate erudite research into Hermetism. After Reizenstein, text-criticism and erudition are represented above all by Walter Scott and A. J. Festugiere ... 

It would have been unusual to mention the importance of mathematics to physicians in a book on poisons in the eighteenth century (Richard Mead, A mechanical account of poisons in several essays, second edition published in 1708), but nearly 300 years later mathematical and computational (in silico) methods are valuable assets for toxicology as they are in many other areas of science. From such a vantage point no one would have foreseen the broad impact and importance of toxicology itself, let alone its entwined relationship with pharmaceutical and environmental research. Now is the time for an assessment of the convergence of toxicology and computational methods in these areas and to outline where they will go in the future. 

The Glebs (Richard became Bristol-Myers s CEO in 1972) continued to grow the company through acquisitions in advertising-intensive consumer products. In 1965 came the purchases of Brackett, producers of Windex, Draino, and O Cedar mops in 1967, of Mead Johnson, makers of infant formulas and children s vitamins, followed by Abbott Tresses and in 1971, of Ellen Kaye Cosmetics. Nearly all these acquisitions and smaller ones made during the 1960s were paid for by blocks of common stock.

The famous German writer Thomas Mann, in his 1930 novel Mario und der Zauberer (Mario and the Magician, 1930), explores how hypnosis relates to the mesmerizing power of Fascist political leaders. In a 1956 article, professor Frank A. Pattie claimed that Franz Anton Mesmer, one of the fathers of hypnosis, plagiarized his dissertation from a work by the English physician Richard Mead, an acquaintance of Sir Isaac Newton.
