McCoy reaction

Nowick and Danheiser148 have explored a-cyclopropyl acyl silane generation from a-haloacyl silanes through McCoy reactions (Scheme 57) and via sulphur ylids (Scheme 58). Ylid species such as 24 were found to be stable in aprotic solvents in the presence of lithium salts, and were used for the cyclopropanation of a,/3-unsaturated aldehydes.

That the mechanism of allylic bromination is of the free-radical type was demonstrated by Dauben and McCoy, who showed that the reaction is veiy sensitive to free-radical initiators and inhibitors and indeed does not proceed at all unless at least a trace of initiator is present. At the present time, catalytic reactions in supercritical carbon dioxide for the manufacture of fine chemicals appear to be more commercially feasible (McCoy, 1999). The McCoy method also allows the preparation of cyclopropylacylsilanes 33. Treatment of a-haloacylsilanes with lithium diisopropylamide (LDA) or with lithium tetramethylpiperidide (LUMP) affords enolates which combine with a variety of electrophilic olefins to produce cyclopropane derivatives33. The major diastereomers formed in the reactions of 2-chloro-l-(/er/-butyldimethylsilyl)ethanone are usually the civ-compounds, while the corresponding a-bromo acylsilane exhibits a higher degree of trans selectivity.
