Watson and Crick shared the 1962 Nobel Prize in physiol ogy or medicine with Maurice Wilkins who with Rosalind Franklin was responsible for the X ray crystallographic work...

Early diffraction photographs of such DNA fibers taken by Rosalind Franklin and Maurice Wilkins in London and interpreted by James Watson and Francis Crick in Cambridge revealed two types of DNA structures A-DNA and B-DNA. The B-DNA form is obtained when DNA is fully hydrated as it is in vivo. A-DNA is obtained under dehydrated nonphysiological conditions. Improvements in the methods for the chemical synthesis of DNA have recently made it possible to study crystals of short DNA molecules of any selected sequence. These studies have essentially confirmed the refined fiber diffraction models for A- and B-DNA and in addition have given details of small structural variations for different DNA sequences. Furthermore, a new structural form of DNA, called Z-DNA, has been discovered.

The secondary structure of DNA is shown in Figure B. This "double helix" model was first proposed in 1953 by James Watson and Francis Crick, who used the x-ray crystallographic data of Rosalind Franklin and Maurice Wilkins. Beyond that, they were intrigued by the results of analyses that showed that in DNA the ratio of adenine to thymine molecules is almost exactly 1 1, as is the ratio of cytosine to guanine ...

The Editors of Advances in Polymer Science extend their warmest felicitations to Dr. Maurice Huggins on the occasion of his eightieth birthday on September 19 th, 1977. We are happy to dedicate this 25th Volume to him in recognition of his outstanding contributions to Polymer Science and to other branches of physical science. 

Not surprisingly, Maurice always had the demeanor of a countryman, and he remembered and recalled with affection his early upbringing in a rural part of England. His birthplace was in the hamlet of Bromstead, located in the village of Moreton on the Staffordshire border. It is about 5 miles from Newport, Shropshire. The family owned some land in Shropshire, and Stacey always considered himself to be a Shropshire man. 

At these sites, Maurice passed his childhood, a period he enjoyed very much and where he learned country pursuits and animal husbandly—as he said, We always had two pigs in the sty, one to sell and one to keep. Subsequently, after several transitory jobs, his father secured the position of general builder on a local estate. He did not live to see Maurice s major successes. In his early sixties, he tried to release a cat from a trap and was badly bitten. From this incident, he died from septicemia in 1938. Maurice always spoke with gratitude of the encouragement he received from his parents. 

Those who knew the amply-proportioned Maurice of his later years were surprised to be told of his former sporting prowess. He had represented the university in athletics, cricket, and soccer, and after his playing days, he maintained connections with sport. As a senior member of the university, preoccupied with important duties, he continued to give support to student athletics and swimming, and was an honorary life member of the Amateur Athletic Association.
