Dirac, Paul Adrien Maurice

Dirac, Paul Adrien Maurice (1902-84) English physicist. Dirac was one of the founders of quantum mechanics. In a remarkable series of papers in the second half of the 1920s he formulated quantum mechanics in a general way that incorporated the matrix mechanics of Werner HEISENBERG and the wave mechanics of Erwin SCHRODINGER as special cases. He shared the 1933 Nobel Prize for physics with Schrbdinger. [Pg.73]

No one can propose an actual, or even a mental, picture of a spinning electron. Quantum mechanics deals with objects of the microscopic world, objects that one cannot see or feel with human senses. The justification for the laws and formulas of quantum mechanics comes from agreement of the predicted quantities with the results of subtle experiments the necessity of spin emerged when it was observed that some energy splittings in the fine structure of atomic spectra could not be reproduced by equations which included only kinetic energy and electrostatic potential. Paul Adrien Maurice Dirac and Wolfgang Pauli led the way into this development and worked out the mathematical equations. They were awarded Nobel prizes in 1933 and 1945, respectively. [Pg.63]
