Materials preblend

Phenol is supplied commercially either in the solid (crystalline) state or as a solution in water (water content 8-20%). Where supplied as a solid it is usually handled by heating the phenol, and the molten material is pumped into the resin kettles or into a preblending tank. If the solution is used care must be taken to avoid the phenol crystallising out. 

Heated two roll mills consist of two large metal cylinders mounted closely in parallel, which rotate toward one another, creating a narrow gap between the two rolls. This involves the preblending and extrusion of pigments, fillers, additives with the moulding polymer. It is then a ready to use, prematched material. Pigments can include metallic materials (aluminium powder) and materials which provide opalescence. 

For the injection molding of foamable blends, either inert gas is introduced direcdy into the melt or the resin is preblended with a chemical blowing agent. The gas present or formed expands when the material is injected.
